Last night a huge crowd attended the "TRIBUTE TO
PHIL HILL and the 24 HOURS of LE MANS" at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los
Angeles.
Dave McClelland was the Master Of Ceremonies for the affair. All the major
American Stars who won the event participated. Included with Phil Hill, the
first American to win the event, were Carroll Shelby, Dan Gurney, and Bob
Bondurant.
Speakers included noted French photographer Bernard Cahier, drivers
Carroll
Shelby, Dan Gurney, Jim Hall, John Morton, Tony Adamowicz, Danny Sullivan, Jim
Busby, Dick Guldstrand, Bob Bondurant and Stefan Johansson. All made tributes
to both Phil Hill and the great Le Mans classic.
Hill himself spoke about his 1955 trip to Europe when he was summoned to Modena
by Enzo Ferrari himself, upon the tragic death of Alberto Ascari. He also spoke
about the tragic 1955 Le Mans race with Italian Ferrari teammate Umberto
Maglioli when he was in the pit at the time of Pierre Levegh's crash.
During his sports car career, Hill had driven for both the Ferrari and Ford
factory efforts, as well as ending his career with Jim Hall's revolutionary
winged Chaparral. In fact his last win came in a Chaparral designed by the
talented Cal Tech graduate, Jim Hall.
