Salty Dog's Grand Prix and the Future of American Racing
by Stephen Cox
I started late. I didn't drive in my first professional auto race until age 21. Before that, I was addicted to go kart racing. No, not the World Karting Association or the National Karting Alliance. I'd never heard of them. My karting career began by paying five dollars for ten minutes of track time in a 5 horsepower, 25 mile per hour fun kart at tiny, tourist-driven venues during our family vacations. We stopped at go kart tracks from Virginia to Utah. Any track, any time. It wasn't real racing, but it was the only racing I had.
Sam Bird followed up his win in the inaugural FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix with an emphatic victory in the second race of the double-header event held on the Brooklyn Circuit. The DS Virgin Racing star produced a faultless lap to record his first pole position of the season, but he was beaten off the line by the Mahindra of Felix Rosenqvist, and the Swede held on out front during the opening stages.
round nine of the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship
Sam Bird became the first driver to win an international motor race in New York, with a superb drive in the FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix. The DS Virgin Racing driver had to work hard for his win. His rookie team-mate Alex Lynn scored a stunning pole position on his debut, while fellow front row starter Daniel Abt of ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport both had to be overcome before the Brit could lead the race.
The FIA Formula E Championship - the world’s first fully-electric single-seater racing series - is joining forces with Enel to offset the emissions of the inaugural race in New York, making it the first-ever zero-emission event in the championship’s history. Ahead of the eagerly-anticipated event making its debut at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook on July 15 & 16 - Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, was joined by Chairman of Enel Patrizia Grieco, CEO of Enel Francesco Starace, and Ken Allen, CEO of DHL Express, at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell.
New Jersey Motorsports Park home of Forty7 race cars
Expand Race Teams and Grow Automotive Service Businesses
Last winter, a member of the New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) Drivers Club had a vision--to build a racecar capable of turning Le Mans level lap times--while being manageable driven by a novice. The DC member brought his concept to Forty7 Motorsports, a design and fabrication facility located at NJMP’s on-site Speedplex High Performance Service Complex.
Montpelier Motor Speedway - A Century of Motorsports
The new Stephen Cox Blog covers one of the oldest race tracks in the world - a small, little known dirt track in eastern Indiana that still runs a weekly program. Montpelier Motor Speedway held its first automobile race on May 4, 1915, just a few weeks prior to Ralph DePalma's win in the 5th Indianapolis 500. Indianapolis. Le Mans. Milwaukee. Those are the places that come to mind when discussing the oldest and most legendary race tracks on the planet. Montpelier is rarely mentioned, though it should be.
George Kibilov won his second consecutive Super Touring class race at round two of the United States Touring car Championship while Thomas Pitre had to fight all race long to win the Sportsman class. Gary Sheehan won the Touring Car class while Daniel Akhromtsev had a fight on his hand in order to come out ahead in the GT class.
As low as last, Lucas di Grassi won the first race of the 2016/17 Formula E season in Mexico City in what can only be described as chaotic. The Abt Audi Sport driver was last after having to pit on the third lap to fix a broken rear wing, but gambled on a safety car just before the halfway mark and claimed the win ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne and Sam Bird.

FIA smart cities, imagine for cities of the future
Electric Cars to clean up big city air pollution
In an age of rapid global urbanization, it becomes ever more pressing to redefine a new model for sustainable urban mobility. Today, at the Geneva Motor Show, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) launched a new initiative – the FIA Smart Cities– with the aim of helping cities to define solutions best suited to tackle new scenarios in which mobility has a central role. The launch platform for this initiative is the FIA Formula E Championship, the first race series for single-seaters entirely powered by electricity, with events held in the heart of some of the most important cities in the world, since 2014.
No vacation of mine is complete without visiting a race track or two, even in the gorgeous countryside of Auckland, New Zealand. And there are many tracks outside Auckland that have had many racing legends race on them. The youngest of those legendary drivers, IndyCars' own Scott Dixon, started his racing career at the tender age of 13 in this area. While there his Mother, Glenys Dixon, took me to the local race tracks to show me where Scott started his open wheel career.
